Phnom Pen h — Gold prices traded near the $4,000-per-ounce mark on Monday, as investors balanced persistent geopolitical tensions and safe-haven demand against expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve will maintain a restrictive monetary policy for longer.
Spot gold was last trading around $4,019 per ounce, while U.S. gold futures hovered near $4,023, recovering from last week's pullback as markets opened the new trading week with cautious sentiment.
The precious metal continues to receive support from escalating geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, where renewed tensions have increased demand for defensive assets. Investors have shifted toward traditional safe havens amid concerns that any further escalation could disrupt global energy markets and weaken broader risk appetite.
However, gold's upside remains constrained by expectations that the Federal Reserve could delay interest-rate cuts following recent comments from policymakers indicating inflation remains above the central bank's long-term target. Higher interest rates typically strengthen the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields, reducing the appeal of non-yielding assets such as gold.
Meanwhile, rising crude oil prices have added another layer of uncertainty to financial markets. Higher energy costs are expected to keep inflationary pressures elevated, reinforcing expectations that major central banks may maintain tighter monetary policies. While inflation traditionally supports gold as a hedge against declining purchasing power, prolonged high interest rates could continue to limit bullish momentum.
Another supportive factor for the precious metal remains continued central bank demand. Several monetary authorities, including the People's Bank of China, have continued to increase gold reserves as part of broader efforts to diversify away from U.S. dollar-denominated assets. Persistent official-sector buying has become one of the strongest structural drivers supporting gold over the longer term.
From a technical perspective, gold remains in a consolidation phase following its recent correction from record highs. Immediate resistance is seen around $4,050, followed by $4,100 and $4,200, while initial support levels are located near $3,980, $3,920, and $3,850. A decisive move above resistance could trigger renewed bullish momentum, whereas a break below support may encourage additional profit-taking.
Market participants will closely monitor developments in the Middle East, speeches from Federal Reserve officials, upcoming U.S. economic data, Treasury yields, and movements in the U.S. Dollar Index for further direction.
Market Outlook
Despite ongoing pressure from elevated interest-rate expectations, the broader outlook for gold remains cautiously constructive. Safe-haven demand, persistent geopolitical uncertainty, and sustained central bank purchases continue to provide long-term support, while monetary policy expectations are likely to remain the primary driver of short-term price action. Investors are expected to remain cautious until clearer signals emerge regarding inflation and the Federal Reserve's policy path.
